As we enter cold and flu season, our Novato dentists are here to help you keep your smile looking and feeling fresh no matter what. Keep reading to get some tips on specific things that you can do to support your smile and your whole-body health this winter. Let’s get started!

Drink plenty of water

One of the absolute best things that you can do for oral and whole-body health is to stay hydrated. Keep a water bottle handy when you’re under the weather, and take the time to rinse your smile throughout the day to encourage saliva production.

Replace old oral hygiene tools

Old toothbrush bristles can harbor old germs and dental debris, making it harder for you to beat illnesses for good. Make sure that you are swapping out your toothbrush every three to four months, and especially during illness.

Ramp up your mouth rinsing routine

Even if you are having trouble keeping food and beverage down, you can rinse your mouth throughout the day for a quick refresh. Rinsing with water is helpful in and of itself, but using a specially-formulated, bacteria-neutralizing liquid can be especially effective.

Pay attention to ingredients in cold and flu products

When you are choosing cough drops, mouth rinses, and throat anesthetizers, look for formulations that contain Xylitol rather than sugar. Sugars actually feed oral bacteria, and can make it more difficult for you to maintain a clean smile.

Make it easy on yourself

You’ll likely find that your energy levels are depleted when you’re sick. Make it simple to care for your smile by keeping a water bottle, mouth rinse, and floss right next to your bed. Take small moments throughout the day to care for you smile.
