Improve Your Daily Tooth Brushing Routine With Info From Our Mill Valley Dentists

If you are already following the recommendation of the American Dental Association, and brushing your smile twice a day, then you are off to a good start when it comes to maintaining oral health. However, there may be a few additional steps that you can take to optimize your oral hygiene routine. That’s what our Mill Valley dentists are going to be talking about today!

  1. Use the right tools

The first thing that our dental team encourages patients to do is to swap their old toothbrushes and oral hygiene tools for new ones if applicable. Most people are surprised to learn that toothbrushes, in particular, should be replaced every three to four months, and always after an illness.

As you choose toothbrush, make sure that it is appropriately sized for your mouth. It is also a good idea to speak with your dental team about what type of bristle is right for you—the goal is to use as soft of a bristle as possible while still effectively clearing away plaque.

  1. Take a look at technique

Speaking of soft bristles, you also want to use a soft touch when you clean your smile. Apply gentle pressure while moving your brush in circular motions. When you start applying too much pressure and scrubbing your smile you may develop thin enamel or receding gum tissue.

  1. Be patient

Few of us really take the time to, well, time our brushing routine; we usually just brush until our smile “looks” or “feels’ clean. Unfortunately, that means that many adult and pediatric patients are not spending enough time cleaning their smiles. Set a timer for two minutes—use this time to clean the entirety of your smile, including your tongue and inner cheeks.

As always our Mill Valley family dentists are more than happy to answer additional questions you may have, and to help you schedule a personal consultation. Give us a call to get started!
